Marine Aquaculture

1. Structuring and financing a company 7 hours This course will allow participants to become aware of the business environment; permits, regulations, financing, assistance programmes, financial partners, subsidies and industry organisation. Presence-based1 or synchronous2 7
2. Improving growing structures 7 hours This course will allow students to understand suspended growing structures in use in Quebec and elsewhere; conventional approach, continuous, growing on inverted collectors (self-managed collectors), cable types, anchors, lines, float and buoys, forces at play, organisation of cable systems. Synchronous 7
3. Managing a company 15 hours This course will explain the operations necessary to managing a company. Bookkeeping (organising receipts, payroll book, cheque book, bank account statements) and the monitoring of financial status (actives, passives, capital, revenue, expenses, net benefit) are amongst some of the elements that will be explained with the help of examples in context. Synchronous 7
4. Computer-based production management 15 hours In this course, participants will develop information-based tools that facilitate production monitoring and managing. Tools will be created using the data processing software Excel. Variables such as production volume, the number of cables, the length of cycles and the yield per sock are explained so that participants can use a software tool to manage infrastructures in an efficient and adapted manner. 5. Primary Processing of Molluscs 15 hours This course will allow participants to learn the following: resource management (traceability of the harvest sites); good industrial practices and specific regulatory requirements; production charts to describe potential products; the characteristics of the primary resource (mollusc); the organisation of workstations; the materials, equipment, and machinery in common use; installing performance standard and control measures; preparation and packaging technologies (preservation), management of residues and effluents. 6. Packaging and Labelling 7 hours This course allows participants to see packaging technology for products destined for market, and to understand Canadian labelling regulations, the declaration of allergens and the required content of a label. Synchronous 7
7. Sale of the product 7 hours This course will explain the importance of being aware of competitors, describe industry tendencies and give information on order books, promoting products, ways of increasing quality, and on the most appropriate means of commercialisation. Synchronous 7
8. Mechanical maintenance 7 hours This course will allow participants to ensure the basic maintenance of the main motor, of the generator’s motor, as well as auxiliary equipment; the correction of oil and coolant levels, oil changes, fuel and air filter changes, checking charging systems, and interpreting temperature, pressure and revolution readings. 9. Hydraulic mechanics 7 hours This course will explain the maintenance procedures for hydraulic systems, in particular the hydraulic crane used for manoeuvring the growing structures; checking pressure, temperature, finding leaks, checking secondary assemblies (hoses, joints and connections) as well as lubricating secondary assemblies. 10. Electrical troubleshooting 15 hours This course will allow participants to perform basic maintenance tasks on electrical systems and their components; cables, grounding (fuses and circuit breakers), electrical appliances (sockets, switches), batteries, gauges, generator assembly. Presence-based 7
11. Marine Aquaculture 101 50 hours This course will allow students to learn about the profession and the requirements of the job, the tasks that need to be carried out, the biology-based knowledge necessary, as well as the principles linked to culturing mussels, scallops and algae using suspended systems. This course will also allow participants to carry out culturing operations (installing and retrieving culture lines, (declumping, socking), taking samples, measuring the growth of specimens, and also harvesting the cultures. Presence-based (27 h): from May - June and/or September-October

1 Asynchronous courses take place using a means of communication (computer) that does not require a simultaneous connection. They could include, for example, distance-learning platforms; Learning activities that can take place at different times depending on the choice of each student.

2 In a synchronous course the instructor (with the group) teaches the class in real time, either by web conference, videoconference or another means.

3 Presence-based courses are part of the traditional teaching methodology and use a common space such as a classroom or laboratory.
